Scenic Drive to Anticline Overlook in Utah
Located between Moab and Monticello in southeast Utah, the Anticline Overlook provides a great panorama of Canyonlands and the La Sal Mountains.
You’ll quickly see why the Anticline Overlook is one of the many places to visit in Utah to add to your bucket list!
Be sure to stop at the Needles Overlook to see views of the red and white sandstone spires known as “the Needles”. This vista sits 1,600 feet above the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. It’s not within the Canyonlands boundaries, or part of the National Park, but managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
And since you’ll be so close, be sure to check out all the things you can do in one day at Needles Canyonlands National Park.

Visiting Anticline Overlook in Utah
The Anticline Overlook is off Highway 191 on County road 133 between Moab and Monticello. At 14.5 miles there’s a Y intersection: go left to access Needles Overlook and go right to access Anticline Overlook. The road to Anticline is also called Hatch Point Road.
The fun begins once you arrive at the overlook! You’ll walk a short distance from the parking lot along a sandstone and gravel path.
At the top there’s a viewing platform with informational boards.
Now it’s time to be amazed at the stunning views! Below is the popular Kane Creek area for 4x4s and ATVs. It’s fun to watch the vehicles traverse the trails from the overlook!
On a clear day, you can see the Colorado River and Arches National Park in the distance.
Be sure to venture to the other side of the overlook to see Island in the Sky, Dead Horse Point, and the Potash Ponds along Potash-Lower Colorado River Scenic Byway.
Because the overlook sits atop a mesa, be prepared for intense sun and strong winds. We timed our visit to be around sunset, but the clouds didn’t cooperate with us!
As far as services go, there is a pit toilet at the parking area, but no water available. Before leaving Moab or Monticello, make sure your gas tank is full and that you have water, food, and other supplies you’ll need based on the weather.
Camping is not allowed at Anticline Overlook.
