Packing For a Trip to Moab, Utah
Time of year, weather, and the Moab adventures you’ll do are important to consider when packing for your trip. Weather in Moab can be unpredictable any time of year, so be sure to check the forecast and pack accordingly!
Moab, Utah is a dry, semi-arid and desert climate. It is one of the driest states in the country with one of the lowest relative humidity percentages. Your skin will feel it so be sure to pack hand lotion and lip protection with sunscreen!
If you’re wondering when the best time to visit Moab is, here’s what to expect each season.
Moab in the Spring
What to expect at Moab in the Spring: The spring months of March, April and May are almost perfect in Moab.
- March: high 64 / low 35 – 3 days rain
- April: high 73 / low 42 – 3 days rain
- May: high 83 / low 50 – 3 days rain
It’s always good to check the weather forecast so you’re prepared for rain in the spring, and maybe even a dusting of snow in March. Usually if it snows, it doesn’t last long and quickly melts.
Moab in the Summer
What to expect at Moab in the Summer: The summer months of June, July and August will be HOT in Moab. We recommend you plan your outdoor activities for the mornings and late afternoons. Take a break during the heat of the day to enjoy your hotel AC and swimming pool!
- June: high 95 / low 58
- July: high 100 / low 65
- August: high 97 / low 64
WATER: You should drink at least one gallon of water per day, and always carry water with you during all hiking activities. We use hydration packs and carry hydroflask bottles in our camera backpack.
SNACKS: Pack and eat plenty of healthy snacks and food. There may be NO services on the trails you’ll hike or the drives you take.
SUN PROTECTION: Wear a sun hat and use sunscreen . Moab’s high elevation and dry air can be hard on your skin. You’ll want to carry lip balm with sunscreen and hydrating lotion to apply as needed when you’re out exploring the trails.
Moab in the Fall
What to expect at Moab in the Fall: The fall months of September, October and November in Moab start to cool off and are perfect for outdoor activities! You’ll want a fleece jacket for the colder mornings and evenings.
- September: high 88 / low 54
- October: high 74 / low 41
- November: high 58 / low 30
Moab in the Winter
What to expect at Moab in the Winter: The weather at Moab in the winter is cold and unpredictable if a storm rolls through. Remember that Moab is about 4,000 feet above sea level so it does get cold in the winter, even if the sun is out.
- December: high 45 / low 22 – 3 days rain/snow
- January: high 44 / low 22 – 3 days rain/snow
- February: high 52 / low 26 – 3 days rain/snow
After a snow storm, the Arches and Canyonlands roads might be closed for plowing for a few hours. Keep in mind that the roads, parking lots, and pullouts in the parks can still be icy, especially in shaded areas.

The America the Beautiful Annual Pass
We highly recommend you get the US National Park Pass if you’ll be visiting any Utah National Parks in the Moab area.
The annual pass is valid for one year from the date of purchase. Check the National Park Service website for the most current pricing information.
One of the cool features of the national parks pass is it allows two signatures so the pass can be shared. The two people don’t have to be related either. You will need to show photo ID each time you use the pass.
We like to buy the National Park pass through REI – they donate 10% of sale proceeds to the National Park Foundation which is cool! You can also get them at any of these Federal Recreation Areas.
