Best Month to Visit Grand Teton National Park

Spring Months at Grand Teton National Park

The spring months of March, April and May are pretty quiet at Grand Teton. You’ll find limited things to do in early spring:

Usually the first of May is when the Teton Park Road from Taggart Lake to Signal Mountain Lodge is open.

At any time in the late spring there may be snow and lakes still frozen, especially close to the base of the Teton range. And of course, the higher up you go in elevation, the more winter holds on!

March Vacation to Grand Teton

When visiting Grand Teton National Park in March, the highs are near 39 and the lows around 11 degrees F.

Even though March is technically spring, it will still feel like winter. We recommend an insulated jacketfleece jacketwarm hat and gloves.

In March, most of the services and roads are still closed at this time which is a great way to avoid the busy season crowds! It’s STILL all about winter activities like skiing and snowshoeing!

April Vacation to Grand Teton

Grand Teton National Park in April will still feel like winter so be prepared for cold and snow. Average highs are around 47 with the lows around 20 degrees F.

Enjoy skiing, snowshoeing and walking along the Teton Park Road from Taggart Lake Trailhead to the Signal Mountain Lodge.

The road is closed to vehicles in April. Once the snow melts, you can ride your bike on the road until April 30. You can also hike, run, rollerblade and walk your dog on the road.

May Vacation to Grand Teton

You can expect highs near 60 and lows near 30 degrees F at Grand Teton National Park in May.

By mid-May most of the services and roads are open. The weather can still be unpredictable and cold, and trails can still be muddy. By the end of May things should be perfect!

In May you’ll enjoy fewer crowds, scenic drives and wildlife viewing. But many of the hiking trails are muddy or still covered with snow. And some areas in the park are closed due to bear activity.

Summer Months at Grand Teton National Park

The summer months at Grand Teton are the most popular times to visit because the weather is so nice! But that means you’ll need to navigate the crowds. Check out the fun things you can do during the summer months of June, July, and August:

Grand Teton is open 24 hours, every day of the year. All roads, Visitor Centers, lodges and marinas are open in the summer. We recommend you always get updated information on the services available and things to do.

June Vacation to Grand Teton

The weather at Grand Teton National Park in June is just right for daytime activities with highs near 70. It will still be cold in the morning and evening with lows in the upper 30s.

In June the crowds begin to increase, some of the hiking trails will be muddy (or still covered with snow at the higher elevations), and some areas in the park will be closed due to bear activity.

Reservations are required for camping at Grand Teton National Park at all the campgrounds. You can book campsites on Recreation.gov. Reserving six months in advance is recommended!

If you can’t get a spot in the park, there are some RV Parks near Grand Teton National Park the offer tent, RV, and cabin camping options!

July Vacation to Grand Teton

At Grand Teton in July expect daytime highs near 77. It will still be cold in the morning and evening with lows in the upper 30s. July is also a rainy month with afternoon thunderstorms.

Enjoy the lakes at Grand Teton in July: boats, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes all require a permit.

Floating the Snake River offers phenomenal views of the Grand Tetons and a glimpse of the rich wildlife habitat along the banks. And white water rafting tours offer a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of the area in and around Grand Teton National Park.

August Vacation to Grand Teton

Grand Teton National Park in August is the best with daytime highs around 80 and lows around 40!

By August the higher elevation hiking trails should be dried out so you can explore all the Grand Teton day hikes in the park!

You’ll find many amazing sunrise photography spots in Grand Teton National Park to capture the jagged peaks of the mountains complimented by the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

Fall Months at Grand Teton National Park

Early fall is still a busy time at the park. By late fall services at Grand Teton begin to close. Check out the fun things you can do during the fall months of September, October, and November:

With the cooler temperatures at night and the early mornings, especially late fall, be sure to dress in layers and carry a fleece jacket, winter hat, and winter gloves.

Now for the breakdown of what to expect at Grand Teton each month in the fall.

September Vacation to Grand Teton

You’ll enjoy cool temperatures, fall colors and fewer people visiting Grand Teton National Park in September. Expect daytime highs in the 50-60s and lows in the 20-30s.

Although you can’t predict the peak dates to see the fall colors, it usually happens around the 3rd week in September and continues through mid-October. 

During the fall you will see the deciduous trees showcase yellow and orange shades with a little bit of red popping through the Teton Range. 

October Vacation to Grand Teton

Be ready for any type of weather when visiting Grand Teton in October. During the day the highs hover around 52 degrees Fahrenheit and the lows will drop all the way to the mid 20s! 

It’s possible to have snow as early as September, and even more so in October. It is really important that you dress in layers and bring your winter clothing essentials “just in case”.

All roads in the park are open through October, but many park services, campgrounds, and lodges begin to close during the month.

November Vacation to Grand Teton

The temperatures at Grand Teton in November mean daytime highs are near 35 degrees Fahrenheit and the lows are in the teens! 

In November all services and most of the roads are closed to vehicles. But that means you can experience the park in a completely different way and avoid the busy season crowds!

It’s exciting to see the moose at Grand Teton with their large antlers. Here’s a list of great wildlife viewing areas you can access in November:

Winter Months at Grand Teton National Park

You can enjoy winter activities at Grand Teton National Park like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and photography!

All services are closed during the winter. Highway 191 is the only road open to vehicles from Jackson to Moran. Teton Park Road from Taggart Lake to Signal Mountain Lodge is only open for non-motorized use.

January Vacation to Grand Teton

The weather at Grand Teton National Park in January is COLD: highs are near 25 degrees Fahrenheit and the lows are near 0! 

We recommend visiting the Elk Refuge between the park and the town of Jackson, and take a sleigh ride tour to see the elk up close!

If you’re lucky you may see eagles, coyotes, foxes, bison, deer, wolves, trumpeter swans and more on the tour… as well as on the roads or trails that are open in the park.

February Vacation to Grand Teton

The average highs at Grand Teton in February in February are near 30 degrees with the lows around 0 degrees F.

The winter landscape at Grand Teton is amazing! The jagged peaks of the snow-capped mountains are a photographer’s dream!

Accessing the best places to photograph Grand Teton National Park in February is difficult. Many of these locations look vastly different when the water is frozen and snow-covered.

Be ready with your WINTER camera gear to capture images the landscape and wildlife as you drive along the road, or ski along the trails.
